Livestock farming
Animal husbandry is the production sector that utilizes domesticated animals such as livestock and poultry, or the physiological functions of wild animals like deer, musk, foxes, minks, otters, and quails, through artificial breeding and rearing, transforming plants like pasture and feed into animal energy to obtain animal products such as meat, eggs, milk, wool, cashmere, leather, silk, and medicinal materials. It is a crucial link in the material exchange between humans and nature. Animal husbandry is one of the main components of agriculture, standing alongside crop production as the two pillars of agricultural production.
The livestock industry in agricultural areas, primarily based on stall feeding, is referred to as agricultural area animal husbandry. The characteristics of agricultural area animal husbandry are: ① It is mainly a grain-consuming type of animal husbandry. The main livestock species are those that consume more grain, such as pigs, poultry, draft animals, and goats, with feed sources being agricultural products, feed grains, straw, wild grasses, and wild vegetables, and utilizing slopes and scattered grasslands for grazing. ② Mixed-use animal husbandry is relatively developed, such as dairy-draft or meat-draft cattle farming, horse breeding, and donkey farming. ③ It is primarily stall-fed. Except for short-term grazing after crop harvests, the rest of the time is spent on artificial feeding in livestock houses. ④ Feed costs account for a relatively high proportion, generally over 65% of livestock expenses. It can fully realize the integration of agriculture and animal husbandry, with detailed management and a high level of production. The main operating mode is as a sideline for farming households, along with state-owned pastures and specialized breeding households. Currently, agricultural area animal husbandry remains a major part of China's animal husbandry.
